Calling to you
Being of both realms is an installation and performance for the Marigold Project in collaboration with anhelo anhelo taking place on October 15th, 2022. This performance is intended to call upon those who have transitioned during the current uprising against tyrannical, patriarchal oppression happening in what is contemporarily called Iran. In commemoration of the women of Iran, I collaborate with marigold and their relationship to the end, to death, to transition out of one season of life into another. Marigolds are a technology recognized by many cultures, but I'm calling specifically and honoring the knowledge of the indigenous people of the Americas, who have historically utilized them as a guide in the darkness of the afterlife. We have gathered their blooms, dried them, and turned them into a powder as a mark making tool. I utilize the technology of the peoples within my lineage of Iranian women, of weavers, portals and protectors of life to craft them into the symbol of the death bird, the condor. A symbol we have used for thousands of years, woven into our clothing, into the adornments in and on our home, under the feet of those who we love. Wrapping our loved ones within their protection. The condor. is the symbol of the spirits of the afterlife. Of a being that exists in the liminal space between one realm and another. I arrange these flowers in this symbol to call upon the spirits that have recently transitioned, connecting with them, Opening the communication between our realms to fortify the resistance of iranian people, specifically the historically targetted by the current regime, queer people, women and our allies.
